Padhye’s Passing - So you want to play college football? Part 2

Highlight Films......

The first and most important tip I can give you about making your highlight film, is that you must always make sure that your information is included with your highlight film.  Do not assume that the coach will be able to figure it out from your mailing package, and just writing on your DVD is not good enough.  If you are sending out a DVD to a coach, make sure to include an information sheet that has the following: contact information (name, address, email, phone number, etc.), physical attributes (height, weight, bench, 40yd time, etc.), high school information, coaches name, year in school, GPA, test scores, and any other stats and awards that you may have.  If you are using a recruiting website such a Webletes.com then this information should be updated on there for the coach to see.  The more information you can provide the coach the better.  It is also a good idea to put your contact information at the beginning and end of the highlight film in case the coach happens to lose your information sheet.  Remember, if the coach can’t contact you, he can’t recruit you!

The 2nd tip is to make sure that you are easily identifiable on your highlight film.  Most of today’s highlight film programs allow you to point an arrow or put a circle around the player to highlight where they are.  Do this on every play before the snap so the coach who is watching the film knows where you are so he can watch you the whole play.  Coaches are strapped for time and it is very frustrating to have to continue to rewind a play to figure out if they are watching the right person.  They can’t evaluate you if they can’t figure out which person you are on the field.  And if they have to do this for every play, it will not be long before they turn the film off and move on to the next recruit.  If you do not have a program that can highlight the player, make sure that you are very clear about what jersey number you are wearing, what color jersey, and what position you will be playing.  Remember, if the coach can’t see you, they can’t recruit you!
The next thing to consider when making your highlight film is to put your best highlights at the beginning of the film.  Every coach has their own style when it comes to watching and evaluating recruiting film.  Some coaches will watch a highlight film in its entirety and then make an evaluation.  Other coaches will watch a highlight film and if they don’t see something they like in the first 5 plays, they will turn it off and move onto the next film.  So I suggest you go through all your highlights and find your best 3-5 plays, and then put those at the beginning of your highlight.  This doesn’t mean that you should just throw any big play you had in the first 3-5 clips and move on.  For example if you are Defensive Lineman and the QB fumbles and you fall on it, it may be a big play for you and your team, but it doesn’t show the coach watching your film anything.  I mean anyone can fall on a football.  I’m talking about plays that show that you are athletic, that you can make plays, and that you have what it takes to play at the next level.   For example if you are a Defensive Lineman and you get off the ball quick, make a good pass rush move, and sack the QB or force a bad pass, that’s the kind of highlight that will stick out.  While fumble recovery may have been a huge play in the game, the sack or QB hurry highlight shows the college coach what you are capable of.  So again pick your best plays, not the biggest plays, your best plays, and put those at the start of your highlight film.

Highlights for multiple positions/offense/defense (Separate)

The next tip to making a quality highlight film has to do with what position or positions you play.  Unlike in college, most high school football players tend to play more than one position.  They usually play both sides of the ball as well as on many of the special teams.  If you happen to be a player who falls into this category, then it is very important to do the following.  Make sure that your highlights are separated based off what side of the ball you are playing.  Most DVD making programs allow you to create different chapters, so you should take your highlights based on position an create them in different chapters so the coach watching your film can easily locate what he is looking for.  If you are getting recruited to play Quarterback, the coach wants to watch your highlights as a quarterback.  The less they have to search through your highlights

Make a highlight film, not a movie

No slow motion or fast forward

Don’t repeat the same play over and over again

Make sure your highlights are actually highlights.  Don’t waste time with unnecessary clips.

Do not send game film unless it is requested by the recruiting coach

College Football Bowl Season

Bowl season is just around the corner, and almost half of college football's Division 1 schools are currently preparing for one more game this season. Bowls provide a number of benefits for colleges who make them . The obvious benefits are the thousands or millions of dollars in revenue that a university will receive for making the bowl. Athletes will also receive benefits based on the specific bowl they play in from travel gear, to tv's, to phones totaling thousands. However, the most underrated benefit is the amount of extra practice time the schools will get. This can be incredibly important in the development of young players. An extra 3-5 weeks of practice will be held in December to January and good coaches take advantage of it. Seniors will often time get shortened practice or even days off to give the young guys more reps. It's no coincidence a lot of the same teams go to a bowl each year. So enjoy bowl season, and if you're practicing right now, get better!

Highlight Tape Tips

The first and most important tip I can give you about making your
highlight film, is that you must always make sure that your
information is included with your highlight film.  Do not assume that
the coach will be able to figure it out from your mailing package, and
just writing on your DVD is not good enough.  If you are sending out a
DVD to a coach, make sure to include an information sheet that has the
following: contact information (name, address, email, phone number,
etc.), physical attributes (height, weight, bench, 40yd time, etc.),
high school information, coaches name, year in school, GPA, test
scores, and any other stats and awards that you may have.  If you are
using a recruiting website such a Webletes.com then this information
should be updated on there for the coach to see.  The more information
you can provide the coach the better.  It is also a good idea to put
your contact information at the beginning and end of the highlight
film in case the coach happens to lose your information sheet.

Remember, if the coach can’t contact you, he can’t recruit you!

Padhye’s Passing - So you want to play college football?

Weblete Nation we'd like to introduce to our new guest blogger Nubis
Padhye. There, you've met him. He can take it from here.

Highlight Films

My name is Nubis Padhye and I am a former College Quarterbacks Coach.
Over the past 10 years the process for recruiting and being recruited
has changed a great deal.  As a potential recruit, your goal is to get
yourself in front of the eyes of as many college coaches as you
possibly can.  With all the new technologies, highlight films, and
recruiting websites, that has actually become easier yet more
difficult at the same time.  You see for you the recruit, you may be
able to send your film out to hundreds of coaches with one simple
click of the mouse and a link to your webletes page.  From there the
coach can easily watch your film, see your information, and contact
you right?  But the problem is, you aren’t the only recruit who can
send his film out so easily.  Every other potential recruit in the
country can do the exact same thing you are doing, which means that
college coaches end up with hundreds of highlight films that they have
to sort through and watch.  So somehow, someway, you have to make sure
your highlight film sticks out and grabs the attention of the coach
who is going to be watching it.  And because they have so many films
to watch, they don’t have the time to wait, so it needs to catch their
attention early.  In the next few weeks I will provide you with a few
tips to consider when making your highlight film that will help you to
create a product that will help you to show the best you have to
offer.

So your football season is over? What’s next?

It’s time to push forward with recruiting. I’m a former college football coach and have been on the other side of the recruiting game. I know what they are looking for. The biggest thing a coach wants to see if your tape. Coach are not usually impressed with stats or lack there of. They want to see how you move and play the game. When making a highlight tape there a few basic tips I like to give athletes:

  1. Always put your best plays first. Coaches will rarely sit through an entire highlight film to see every play. This seems basic but is not always done. Some athletes will put their highlights in order by game sequence and coaches may not even see your best plays.
  2. That bring me to my second tip. You don’t have to make a 50 play highlight. Pick your best 15-18 plays from the season.
  3. Each position is different but show as many different aspects of your game as possible. For instance, if you’re a receiver, you can’t just show deep ball touchdowns. You want to show your speed but other aspects are very important to recruitment as well. Coaches want to see you run routes, make tough catches, and block.
  4. Don’t have a long intro. Have basic information and stats and get to video as soon as possible.

Please email me with any further questions you may have about your specific highlight tape or recruitment in general. We can help you at Webletes.com with your highlights by going to Webletes.com/purchasevideo.

Tips To Get Recruited - Part 2

In part 1 of “How to get recruited,” we went over the “mental  side” of getting  recruited.
So once you’ve fired yourself up and cleared any internal roadblocks, it’s time to going on the practical steps...

  1. Sign up for an online college recruiting profile program. Our favorite is Webletes.com.  Get help writing a profile that makes you look like a rock star that any coach must have on their team.
  2. Start contacting college coaches and ask questions about their program.  Here’s a little trick to get some inside information.  Don’t always go straight to the head coaches of these programs.  Make connections with the assistant coaches. It’s so easy to find assistant coaches on the college websites. They are much more open and likely to give you the inside information on what it takes to play there. Email them directly or better yet, make a phone call.
  3. Hook into current players on the team or recently graduated athletes. Use Facebook, Twitter, and Linkedin to start conversations.  You will be amazed at how they will be willing to help you. They were just like you not too long ago and know what you’re going through.  Most people are flattered that you ask them.  Make sure and be very complimentary and polite.
  4. Learn something about these people before you talk to them. Reach out to as many of these people as possible. Develop your own personal network. This is what people do to further their careers, so it’s an important skill to learn now and will benefit you in everything you do.
  5. Ask for and take any advice you get from the coaches and players and run with it!  Use their names to reach out to others.
  6. Go to showcase events for your sport. They’re everywhere. If there isn’t one in your town, find one you can take a bus to. Beg, borrow or earn the money to do what it takes to show up for these.
  7. Keep working out and staying in shape even if your season is over to be ready at a moment’s notice for any opportunity to play.
As a last resort, remember, there’s always the chance to get on a team as a walk-on. Kurt Suzuki, major league baseball player, was a walk-on at a Division 1 college and played backup to two other players on full scholarship. He worked his way into the starting position and has now played 5 years of professional baseball for the Oakland A’s.   There are thousands of similar stories like this.

Keep pumping yourself up and take MASSIVE ACTION. Make this goal one of your highest priorities.

One final thought for you:
It’s never a lack of resources that keeps us from getting what we want…it’s a lack of resourcefulness.

If you are unsure how to get rid of those negative thoughts or need help making a DECISION and sticking to it, be sure to check out our Mental Toughness Online Training.

Tips To Get Recruited - Part 1

We have asked one of our partners to give their take on High School Sports Recruiting:

It's not that I'm so smart, it's just that I stay with problems longer.  ~Albert Einstein

Are you hoping to get recruited or land a scholarship to play your sport in college? It will come down to one word: PERSEVERANCE.

I bet you are an above-average athlete, who worked hard at your sport. You’re dedicated, motivated and have put in your time.

But, after all those years of practice, training, and competition, you find yourself just under the cut line of being recruited by any colleges. Offer letters aren’t stacking up in your mailbox like you see in the movies.

What should you do? It’s time for you to find your determination and take yourself to another level!

But before I give you the action items, it’s important to understand something about yourself…

As a kid, you’ve spent most of your life being told what to do and how to do it, right? Teachers, parents and coaches have all been there guiding you.  Hopefully, as you’ve gotten older, you’ve taken on more and more responsibility doing things for yourself.
Right now though, you’ve got to take a big step in taking responsibility for your own life and how your story turns out. It all comes down to these questions…

Will you continue to persevere even though it takes work or will you give up? Will you fight for yourself until there’s nothing left…just like you’ve done in your sport, or will you slink back in defeat? Will you prove to everyone that you belong in the top ranks or will you whine and cry about how it’s not fair?

Today is D-day for you.

What you have to do at this point is to go into all out “attack” mode to promote yourself.  It’s all up to you now!

There’s plenty of support out there and great websites like Webletes.com to use to promote yourself, but it’s useless unless you make the decision TODAY to make it happen for yourself.  It’s just like the decision you made to go all out in your sport.

Decide that you will work ceaselessly and tirelessly to put yourself out there and pitch yourself to the coaches as someone they need on their team.

It doesn’t matter if you’ve run into all sorts of blocks and frustrations so far. You’ve got to put those roadblocks aside and redouble your efforts.  Fire yourself up to get what you want – just like your coach used to do before a game. This is what you need to do in the real world and this is your first big test.

Once you make that commitment, you will see that things will start happening. Don’t fixate on one school.  Be open-minded and see what opportunities your efforts create.

The only thing stopping you from getting that scholarship is you.  Too many teens have limiting belief about themselves that stop them from achieving their goals.

If you have destructive mental habits such as…having to do everything perfectly, beating yourself up, telling yourself  “I Can’t” or “It’s too hard,” procrastinating, or any other negative thoughts you need to clear that mental baggage.

Unfortunately, willpower and saying positive affirmations will only get you so far. Clearing mental baggage is what we do at the Mental Toughness Academy.

Part 2... Tomorrow

I know you have it in you!

Mental Toughness Trainer Interview

Tips For Successful Athletic College Recruiting

Even if you are not being actively recruited by colleges there are still things you can do to get a scholarship.
Pat Curran, cofounder of Webletes, a free recruiting website that gives high school and junior college athletes a place to showcase their talents and get exposure to college coaches all over the country, gives us…

The 5 Keys of Success to Athletic Recruiting
1. The first step is to have a recruiting plan. May seem simple, but most athletes don’t have one. They just hope some coaches will find them. Depending on who you are, and where you go to school, that very well may happen. But for the rest of us in this world, that’s not the way it works. Make sure you have an idea of what you want to accomplish during your recruiting process. Is it a any scholarship anywhere? Is it the academics? Or is it just the best fit personality wise? Find what schools fit that profile and align yourself with them.

2. Don’t be discouraged if you’re not getting recruited by every school you want to be. Keep your head up and working hard. You never know what could happen after a standout season.

3. Don’t just go to a camp to be there. Make sure you shine while your there. Show the coaches you have what it takes to make it to the next level. Run from drill to drill and if possible go first in line. Always pay attention and be positive. Coaches love a kid with a good attitude.

4. Start early and be as proactive as possible. The more schools you have interested, the better chance you have of earning a scholarship or an increased scholarship.

5. Impress coaches not only with what you do on the field/court but what you do off of it. Coaches watch what you do on the sideline. It is important how you carry yourself and what aspects of a leader you show. Hustle and be a good sport. Your team will not always be doing well. Put the team on your back and lead them when times are tough. Be positive and encourage them. Your body language can say more than your words.

We would like to welcome Chris & Demitrious Davis to our Webletes blogging family. This upcoming year Chris & Demitrious Davis will be seniors at  Austintown Fitch, Ohio and have agreed to open up their lives to everyone to help athletes who may be going through similar experiences.

We have mentioned multiple times that we truly want to make this blog different and help athletes as much as possible so we have decided that the best advice may just come from your peers sharing their own experiences.

Chris (WR/DB) and Demitrious (QB/DB)  are twins that are being recruited by numerous school all across the country including UCLA, Arkansas, West Virginia, Oregon State, Bowling Green, Cincinnati, Akron, Ohio, Boise State and Indiana.

Interview: College Coach Perspective On Recruiting

We try to give different perspectives on this blog so we recently interviewed a former college coach to give us some feedback about the recruiting process from their point of view.

  • During recruiting - what do you look for in athletes?
You want good character, quality kids. You want to see them working hard and following directions. Then you want  to see them be able to move. Each position has a unique skill set you are looking for. For example, you want to see a DB who has smooth hips and great feet. For a LB they need to be able to move laterally, come down hill, and play physical.
Their character. If an athlete does not have the character you are looking for, you might as well cross him off of your list. He may be a great player or a great athlete but at some point his character issue will come back to haunt you in the long run.
  • Would you recommend athletes approaching coaches instead of waiting for coaches to approach them? why or why not
Always be outspoken and confident. Go approach a coach at a camp or send them a highlight video. The worst thing they can say is they are not interested. Don't let that discourage you. Just cause one school doesn't like you doesn't mean that a number of others will.
  • How do you know if a school is interested in you?
They will make it clear. If a school is interested, they will be writing, calling, emailing, and facebooking you as much as possible within the rules. If you are usually the one contacting the school time and time again, they likely are not overly interested in you.
  • What should I be doing this summer to help my chances?
Get better. Sounds easy, but there are a number of ways to do it. I encourage athletes to workout with their teammates if your team has a lifting or speed program that they do. Make sure every day you are improving and getting better at your weaknesses. Camps can also be beneficial. They are good for exposure and good for learning as well. Make sure to learn at least one beneficial thing at every camp you attend!
