An Intern for Webletes: My Experience

Around March of this year, I found myself in a position the majority of college students find themselves in: eager to gain experience, yet entirely unaware of precisely what I wanted to gain experience in. Intimidated by the job market and internship search, I set out to find an internship that could offer me a wide variety of learning experiences since I was so undecided about my future. Luckily for me, I found Webletes, an online recruiting website that specialized in combine camps for athletes. As a start-up company offering a virtual internship, I thought it would be a flexible, yet hands-on choice. I was right.
Immediately, owners Tim and Pat Curran welcomed me on their staff. Over the course of five months, I helped with a number of things. My main job was managing the Webletes social media pages; I visited the Facebook and Twitter sites daily. I quickly learned about the marketing world as I created Facebook groups, updated daily status, tweeted about Webletes, and posted articles I had found on the ins and outs of the recruiting process. Pat also trained me to make phone calls to athletes, inquiring about their progress in the recruiting process and extending invitations to their combine camps for football, soccer, basketball, and track. The experience I gained making over 400 phone calls was priceless—a much-needed lesson in marketing and sales. Additionally, Tim gave me the responsibility of creating Excel files of the camp results and editing them to create specialized documents for advertisers and college coaches.
I got the chance to meet with Tim multiple times over the summer to talk about the future of Webletes and the decisions that the company made financially and competitively. Because I worked with a smaller company, I was privy to the decisions they made first-hand and able to offer suggestions that they took into consideration and sometimes implemented. I’m infinitely glad that I got to work with Webletes this summer because instead of filing papers away as an assistant intern in a big company, I got to be part of the process and decision making team.

Training / Nutrition / Speed Guide For Athletes

The Webletes staff has developed a one of a kind training opportunity that will separate you from your competition. The Webletes Football Training Manual; “Nutrition, Weight Training and Speed Training” is an instructional guide for a nine week period. Within this program you have a day-to-day, hour-to-hour instruction during the nine weeks. It lays out your nutrition, weight training, and agility. The program includes a monthly calendar/check list.  Within the nutrition component the program tells you what to eat, when to eat it, and how much you need to eat.   Within the weight training section it lays out what lift to perform on the given day and it also instructs you on how many reps and how many sets.  Within the speed training section it guides you through what agility drill to perform that day.  It also tells you how many to do and how fast.   The weight and speed training are also logs so you can keep track of your progress.

Webletes staff worked hard in developing this program in hopes it will provide our members with an edge that can be the difference from a Division 1 scholarship and a Division 2 scholarship.  We hope that you make the right decision and take advantage of the opportunity you have to rise above your competition.

BigMan Camp- Cleveland, Ohio

It's not everyday that Offensive and Defensive Linemen get a chance to work with College Coaches. That'll change this Saturday at the first annual Webletes.com Big Man Camp at Oberlin College.

This Saturday, March 31st, Webletes will be joined by coaches from Oberlin College, Manchester College, North Olmsted High School and Buckeye High School for the camp in the newly built Oberlin College indoor facility.

Every camp coach has either played or coached in college! Athletes will be tested on a few agility drills and the bench press. They then will be taught on the techniques of both offense and defensive line. Drills will be conducted to improve footwork, hand-eye coordination, and block reaction amongst a number of other important skills to play on the line. We'll then finish with the most exciting part  1 on 1s'! We can't wait!

Registration online will be taken until Thursday. You can also register at the door. To sign up online go to http://webletes.com/campnew.

Webletes.com Kicking / Punting Camp -Cleveland

What a great Kicking Camp we had this past weekend in North Olmsted, Ohio. Every kicker/punter who attended got better. Thanks again to Gregg Berkshire and Todd Carter for bringing their kicking and punting expertise and helping these athletes improve their skill level. It was impressive to see how much better, in one day, many of them got. Athletes learned basics from their drops on punts, to footwork on their kickoff, and just about everything in between. We are excited to for our next Kicking/Punting Camp we are hosting on June 23rd in Charlotte. For full details, and to register, go to Webletes.com/campnew. Don't forget to follow us on twitter for the latest news @Webletes.

Recruiting Story: Pat Curran

Here's my recruiting story:

Somewhere around springtime of my junior year, I decided I was going
to be a Division 1 football player. I told my coach I did not want to
talk to any coaches that were not from a D-1 school. I did this for
two reasons. First, I wanted to play at the highest level. And two, I
did not want to waste any more coaches’ time recruiting me. My mind
was made up, and I was going to make this happen.

After that decision, I was only talking to three schools; Bowling
Green, Kent St. and UMass. This made recruiting fairly easy for me. I
wanted to go to Kent St. or BG. UMass seemed too far for away. So
going into my senior season, I was down to two colleges. Unlike today,
college camps were not a big deal. The senior evaluation camps did not
come about often and attendance numbers were no where near where they
are now.

Senior year was another strong one for me and yet again recruiting was
heating up. More D-2 and D-3 schools were coming in trying to see me,
but Coach Ryan (my head coach) would tell them I was not interested.
Kent St. and BG stayed on me and both offered me a walk-on position on
their football teams. By no means was I satisfied, but it was my only
hope of making my dreams come true. So in the fall of 2002, I became a
preferred walk-on at Bowling Green State University.

Off Season Volleyball Workouts

As a volleyball recruit, it is important to train during the season as well as in the off season. Each individual, coach, or workout facility may have a different opinion about what is necessary for a volleyball player to do in the off season. If your coach or athletic trainer gave you a specific workout, make sure to follow all of the drills because there is a reason they gave it to you.

If you are working on your own, there is a variety of different things you can do. Speed, agility, and quickness are keys to being a great volleyball recruit. Along with those three qualities, it is also important for a volleyball player to work on increasing their vertical. This can be done through different jumping drills as well as strengthening the leg muscles. Here is a detailed workout for volleyball athletes http://mrstillotson.files.wordpress.com/2009/10/volleyball-off-season-workout.pdf

It is important that you make sure you are going into the fall season in shape. It is also important that while you are training off the court, you find time to get touches on a volleyball and play as much as possible.

NCAA Division II Recruiting Rules

This from our good friend Rick Allen at
http://www.informedathlete.com.

You may have noticed that NCAA Div. II loosened their recruiting rules at the NCAA Convention this past week. Effective June 15, prospects who will be entering their junior year after June 15 will be able to have unlimited contacts (as long as they're during a contact period), phone calls, or text messages from Div. II coaches.  Will be interesting to see what Div. I does in reaction, if anything, and how soon they may act.
